HAITIAN CONFLICT
MAD ALEX PHOTOGRAPHY > HAITIAN CONFLICT
AS a result of luck, fate and free will my friends and I were able to fly to Nassau, Bahamas in January, 2008. Long story short, 14 Las Vegas models were invited to stay at the Atlantis Resort and hang out at Michael Jordan’s Celebrity Golf Tournament events. My friends Alex Schmit, Rocky Fain, Akilah Taylor, Andrea Tiede and I were among that group. Alex (who is also the pastor of Soulstice, a church in Las Vegas) had a contact in the Bahamas through a missionary organization. Pastor Basil was that contact. With his help we were able to spend our days documenting Nassau and the plight of Haitian refugees via camera and video. This collection of photos is the result of that week. <p>THIS GALLERY IS DEDICATED TO THE ETERNAL MEMORY OF MR. BRETT JEWELL THE KING

Though Our Stay At The Atlantis Resort Was Amazing, We Deeply Desired To Leave Our Plush Tourist Surroundings And Experience Something REAL.

We Were Enthusiastically Greeted By Juanel. Though His Physical Impairments Prevent Him From Walking And His Speech Is Limited, Juanel Was Quite Possibly The Most Positive, Ecstatic Individual We Met During Our Trip.

Today the scene at FORT FINCASTLE is full of the hustle and bustle of tourists fresh off of cruise ships. This area is full of locals peddling their colorful wares out of modest outdoor kiosks. However, long ago, much blood was shed on these grounds. While battles raged above, under the fort slaves were once held in underground cells. Over a period of several decades, the slaves were famously able to secretly dig a passageway several hundred yards through the rock and dirt to their eventual freedom.

These Are Remains Of A Boat That Was Used By Haitians To Illegally Sail To The Bahamas Directly From Haiti. It Was Burned By Bahamians Soon After It Came Ashore.

Resting 100 Yds. Down The Coast, This Boat Reportedly Contained Over 100 Haitians, Many Of Whom Died During The Trip From Haiti. Every Year Thousands Of Haitians Bravely Face Death As They Make Their Dangerous Trek Across Dangerous Waters, Seeking A Life Free Of Oppression. Alex humbly approaches the boat...

Inside The Hull Of The Ship, Rocky Is Working On Audio. We were humble and reserved as we stood in the place where so many had died just a few days prior. Small waves flowed around us and sea water sputtered forth through the holes of the vessel's wooden bowels, giving out quiet groans and creeks that I will never forget. Rocky's Serious Demeanor Summed Up Our Somber State Of Mind.

Inside, Alex Found This Makeshift Broom. I Brought It Back To America As A Reminder Of This Life Changing Trip, It's People And The Importance Of The Human Struggle. GOD BLESS.
